Hey all (two of you),
An update on my new notebook.
It has n't come :'(
This has been an update on the notebook.
It is still "In Process" so I'm not sure on its status. I'm hopping it come really soon as I am in heavy withdrawal without one. I work with Windows everyday at work and my parents computers both have Windows XP and I'm so in need of a friendly operating system. When I get my new computer and I install Ubuntu, my distro of choice I think I will write a review about it.
It also seems that there are other blogs with the name "Scott's Musings" so I'm thinking about changing my name. If you have any suggestions drop a comment in the comments section of this post and leave your thoughts.
Last night i went to my first nightclub with some friends. I enjoyed it till just about when we left, they decided that they would stick with rap music and for me that sort of destroyed the mood. In the beginning they played some really decent music and that made dancing fun. and too boot there was no cover so for me it was enjoyable free entertainment. I would do it again.
Its almost that time of year gain - yup Christmas. Here it has started snowing periodically added to the mood. I can't wait - lights, ornaments, lights, family, lights, music, oh did I mention lights. I love the new LED lights that are out they are really cool, literally. In grade 12 I made my own LED light sting that can plug in, and they're still working.
Well thats all fokes!

The on my mind part
As my title suggests there should be some content on here that is currently on my mind.
Well here we are at the end of the post and I'm so glad I got that out. Thanks for reading.
Apple
Apple just released Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard. I am a person who doesn't own a Mac but is comfortable in using them when needed. From what is floating around there is a lot of hype about this new release. It has taken Apple over two whole years to release this OS update. They clam that there is 300+ new and updated features that were added to the OS and its the best Mac OS X ever. For a really well written article about it check out the Ars Technica review. I personally like some of the changes in the OS but as I don't use it I don't want too speak bias about something I don't use. The one thing I have noticed is that when doing an upgrade random applications and iMovie do not function properly. As well, there might be speed issues on older Intel machines.
My new notebook
I ordered myself a new notebook on Tuesday :D I'm so excited. I never new that the stages of grief applied to computers, but apparently for me they do. I was first thinking "Oh I can fix it and it will be all good", then I was mad at it and trying to figure out why it was happening to me. Followed by a period where I mopped about in sadness over its frying. Now I'm finally at the point where I can get a new one without any problems because I have accepted that it will not be back. Goodbye Notebook - I will always remember you.
With that said, I bought myself an ASUS F3Sv-C1, Its a nice notebook, if you want more info just Google the model and there will be information galore. The only thing thats somewhat daunting is that I have to drive to Toronto to pick it up because I'm too cheap to pay the $40.00 shipping fee and the 2% credit card fee which is 38 something dollars. It will cost me about 20 - 25 $ to drive to Toronto and back which is way cheaper than spending $80.00 that isn't even for the notebook. It will be my first long distance driving trip with me driving (don't tell Andrei) so it will be exiting :D :D. I can''t wait till Saturday :D

Music
So I've come to a conclusion. I like 80's, 90's, 00's music with female singers. And this seems to be my biggest conclusion about music. I took me a while to realize the connection between most of the artists I like and it was hitting me in the ear. Thats not to say that I don't like other types or bands, like I like Coldplay and the B-52's (new album in Feb. '08) but the core of my likes is female singers. Next step is to figure out why.

So I'm not sure how this will turn out...night does that too you!
So this is my first post in a while, I get busy and simple things slip my mind.,..
Notebook
I have the best luck ever (well I'm making a false acusation, but it sounds cool). My notebook died a feww months back and now I am in the process of buying a new one. And by die i mean suicide. The Video card decided to fry itself and in doing so took down the BIOS, kinda like it was an acomplsis. For a while it would boot to the Toshiba log (did i mention it was a Toshiba P10?) and then to GRUB and Windows would boot from there but the mouse clicks and keyboard wouldn't respond. When trying to boot Ubuntu it would go through the usplash but then just hang when about to start X11. Randomly the BIOS logo wouldn't come up and the screen would stay black then turn white and fade back and forth with random colours. Now it just does that. My HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is still in perfect working order and the DVD-RW drive still is perfect but the BIOS is toast and so the computer is rendered useless. Hence the getting a new one.
SSH
SSH is amazing, not only is it versatile but it also is built into Linux, Mac OS X, BSD and other variants of Unix. It has trhe ability to tunnel and its all encrypted. Very handy, no more here.
Lack of Linux
So with my computer out of commission I have been with out my daily Linux fix. It was ok for a little bit but after awhile it gets tough to stay without it. The first analogy I can think of is not masturbating for a while. The first few days are ok, you don't think much about it (well maybe thats just me), then after about 2 to a few days it starts creeping up on your mind.
I have access to it at work but I mostly use Windows XP and occasionally Vista *shivers*. I want my own computer so I can "make it my own" as Simon Cowell would say. I hope too get a new notebook soon.
Well, Thats all folk(s), maybe for in the new, well lets try for month(s).

An Update - Long Overdue, kind of like the library book under my bed........
Hello fellow readers (all 1 of you), here is an update in the life of Scott.....
Nothing has changed.
And that was an update in the life of Scott.
Well, it is now August 21, 2007 and I am done my Spring/Summer 1B Computer Engineering Term and am still awaiting the final marks. I hope I did well. Not much has changed except I have exactly three weeks of holiday (well time off to run around with my head cut off - hmm maybe not so much different after all) till I start my next co-op term back with the ECE department at the University of Waterloo. I love this job as it is exactly what I am good at. Dealing and fixing computer problems. I also get to see how a large scale computer system is implemented in an organization and lots of Linux :D
I would also like to send a thanks out to my friend Andrei for all the support that he has been through the 1B, especally with lecture notes.
And to Anthony for all the crazy adventures that we keep ending up on, London; Wellsley; Waterloo; Kitchener and many more....
It seems that.....ok so I can't think of anything to go with this statment so. They should bring back Fireman Sam, that was such a good kids show. It was informitive without being insaily direct and was very entertaining. Same goes for a lot of the shows that were on TV when I was younger, Camp Caraboo, The Smurfs and more. Some of them I still watch when they are in rerun and I happen to catch them.

Windows Vista - A Not so First Look
This article is not complete and will probably never be. I ran out of time (University) and interest with Windows Vista. I have now had a chance to use it for an extended period of time at my co-op job. I must say that it is not much of an improvement over XP. Just a bunch of flashy eye-candy. It is also a resource hog. If anything, if I got a new computer now with Vista would partition and install a version of Linux on it. Much much more enjoyable in my opinion, just not for everyone. Below is the article:
----------------------------------------------
So today I decided to install Windows Vista Beta 2 just to get the Windows Vista craze out of my system. What will follow is my photo tour of Microsoft Windows Vista and you be the judge.
All images to follow are of a Microsoft Operating System and are therefore completely at the discretion of Microsoft to ask for them to be removed if they feel that free speech is wrong.

First off, my first boot. As you can see the screen size is only 800x600 because out of the box it doesn't like my nVidia video card. I can't blame it to much for that because its only a Beta version but still, its a proprietary video card, Vista should still use a higher resolution like 1024x768 because it should assume that the users monitor can support this because of the requirements of the OS.
Also if you look closely at the Spects of my computer it is telling, it can't see that its a Toshiba P10 - which Ubuntu can easily see and is happy to print out with lshw. As well, it is complaining that I don't have an antivirus application installed and that I will be at risk (Annoying Pop-up 1). Of course I don't have any antivirus software installed....I just installed Vista from scratch.

Next, looking at the save box.

Look familiar? Well it should its an almost complete rip off of GNOMEs save dialogs, coincidence, I think not. They added a touch of Windows extension showing and voilĂ .
Now on the Driver side of things, Vista also doesn't like my Atheros Wireless card or my Creative SoundBlaster card or my onboard AC '97 chipset. Why you may ask, because they are available from Windows Update. So out of the box, or downloaded ISO Vista likes none of my hardware and uses default drivers. Now I will download them from their site using my internal IEEE 802.3u card.
First off, I connected my wired network cable and Vista poped-up with a friendly message asking how I connect to the Internet. Not to annoying for the fact that I didn't configure any Internet connection. But then when I clicked ok to say that I wanted that Vista then gave me a dialog asking if I was me.
Now if I had assigned a password to my account then it would have bothered me for that (This would only be true for a limited user trying to access admin power). This is one of their "security" features that they have implimented in order to make the "users" experience more "secure". This is just like the Security Warning that XP SP2 has everytime you open a file off of a network drive. It is ok once or twice, but after a while it just gets annoying an people will just click it blindly and enter their password. How secure is it now? huh? huh?
